Golf Cart Battery Solutions
Convert golf cart fleets from lead-acid to LiFePO4 with proven 12V deep-cycle building blocks. This guide covers 36V, 48V and 72V system configurations, compatibility essentials, and wholesale/OEM supply options for dealers, fleet operators and cart converters.
Why Golf Carts Are Switching to LiFePO4
Lead-acid batteries have powered golf carts for decades, but fleet operators are switching for measurable reasons:
- 3–4× cycle life: A quality LiFePO4 battery delivers 3,000–4,000+ cycles at 80% depth of discharge, versus 300–500 cycles for flooded lead-acid at 50% DoD. One lithium set outlasts three to four lead-acid replacements.
- Usable capacity: Lead-acid should not be discharged below ~50% without damage. LiFePO4 routinely uses 80–90% of rated capacity — a “100Ah” lithium battery delivers roughly twice the usable energy of a “100Ah” lead-acid battery.
- Weight: LiFePO4 weighs about one-third of an equivalent lead-acid bank, improving hill-climbing and reducing turf wear.
- Zero maintenance: No watering, no equalization charges, no terminal corrosion cleaning — meaningful labor savings across a fleet.
- Faster charging: Lithium accepts higher charge currents and needs no absorption tail, cutting turnaround time between rounds.

Golf Cart System Configurations
Most golf carts run 36V, 48V or 72V systems. The standard conversion approach wires 12V LiFePO4 batteries in series:
| Cart voltage | Configuration | Example with 12V 100Ah | Nominal energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36V | 3 × 12V in series (3S) | 3 × 12V 100Ah | ~3.84 kWh |
| 48V (most common) | 4 × 12V in series (4S) | 4 × 12V 100Ah | ~5.12 kWh |
| 72V | 6 × 12V in series (6S) | 6 × 12V 100Ah | ~7.68 kWh |
Suitable Batteries
The following 12V deep-cycle LiFePO4 batteries are suitable building blocks for golf cart conversions. All are standard catalog products — not golf-cart-specific SKUs:
Installation & Compatibility
- Physical fit: Measure your battery tray before ordering. 12V LiFePO4 batteries are often smaller than the lead-acid units they replace — use the supplied hold-downs or foam spacers to secure them.
- Wiring: Use the same gauge or heavier cabling as the original installation. Keep series interconnects short and torqued to spec.
- Charger: A LiFePO4-compatible charger (14.2–14.6V per 12V battery) is strongly recommended. Lead-acid chargers with desulfation/equalization pulses can trigger BMS protection. See our LiFePO4 charging guide.
- Voltage display: Original “fuel gauges” calibrated for lead-acid voltage curves will read inaccurately. A shunt-based battery monitor is the reliable option.
- Series BMS: Confirm series-operation support and maximum string voltage with the supplier in writing — see the note in the configuration table above.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I replace my 48V lead-acid set with four 12V LiFePO4 batteries?
Yes — this is the standard conversion. Four 12V 100Ah LiFePO4 batteries in series give a 48V 100Ah (~5.12 kWh nominal) pack. Confirm that each battery’s BMS supports series operation at 48V nominal, use a LiFePO4-compatible charger, and verify tray fit.
Do I need a special charger?
Strongly recommended. LiFePO4 charges at 14.2–14.6V per 12V battery with no equalization stage. Lead-acid chargers that apply desulfation pulses (15V+) can trip the BMS high-voltage protection. See our charging guide for details.
How many cycles will I get in golf cart duty?
Typical quality LiFePO4 delivers 3,000–4,000+ cycles at 80% depth of discharge under normal temperatures. Golf cart duty (partial daily discharge, moderate currents) is relatively gentle — many fleets see 5+ years of service. Actual life depends on depth of discharge, temperature and charge practices; see our cycle life vs DoD guide.
Will my existing battery meter work?
Probably not accurately. Lead-acid meters estimate charge from voltage, but LiFePO4 has a very flat discharge curve. A shunt-based battery monitor (measuring actual amp-hours in/out) is the reliable solution.
Can I mix old and new batteries in series?
No. All batteries in a series string should be the same model, capacity and age. Mixing degrades performance and can cause BMS conflicts. Replace the full set together.
Do you offer a complete 48V golf cart battery (single unit)?
Our catalog focuses on 12V deep-cycle building blocks for series configurations, which is the most flexible approach for the variety of cart voltages (36V/48V/72V). For a single-unit 48V option, contact us — 48V configurations can be coordinated as an ODM project subject to volume.
