Battery MOQ Explained: Sample Orders, Trial Runs & How New Dealers Start Small
If you are placing your first battery order from China, the question isn’t really “what is the MOQ?” — it’s “how do I start without betting the business on a supplier I’ve never met?” This guide answers that question from the buyer’s side.
Our philosophy at LJY Energy is simple: Start Small. Grow Together.
Every MOQ range, fee, and lead time below reflects observed industry practice. Actual terms vary by supplier — always confirm during inquiry.
What Is MOQ and Why Does It Exist?
MOQ — minimum order quantity — is the smallest order a supplier will accept. Setup costs for production runs, BMS configuration, and testing are similar whether producing 10 or 1,000 units.
Typical MOQ Ranges for LiFePO4 Batteries
| Product type | Observed MOQ range |
|---|---|
| Prismatic cells 280–302Ah | 2–4 pcs |
| Standard 12V/24V batteries | 1 pc sample |
| 48V 100Ah rack batteries | ~50 units |
| Custom OEM packs | 1–5 packs |
Ranges reflect industry practice; confirmed at inquiry.
For LJY Energy models, MOQ, sample terms and lead time are confirmed per model and project, not taken from the observed ranges above. Start from the standard models in the 12V battery series or the product catalog, see what a quote depends on on the wholesalers page, then send the model through the contact form.
Sample Orders — How They Actually Work
- Sample: 1–5 units for quality verification ($50–$300/unit typical)
- Trial: Tens of units for real-world testing
- Bulk: First commercial order at MOQ
The Smart Path: Sample → Trial → Bulk
Stage 1: Sample for quality. Stage 2: Trial for validation. Stage 3: Bulk with negotiated terms.
Your First-Order Plan: Sample, Trial, Repeat
Most new dealers are not afraid of the MOQ itself; they are afraid of committing money before they know the product, the supplier and their own market. The plan below puts a check between each payment, so a problem costs you a sample rather than a container. It is a buyer’s plan that works with any supplier. For LJY Energy models, the minimum quantity, sample terms and lead time are written into the quotation for the model and order stage, not taken from this page.
| Stage | What you are testing | Checks you run yourself | Put in writing before you pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sample | Does the product match the quoted specification? | Voltage at rest, capacity spot-test, BMS behaviour, build and labelling against the quote | Exact model and configuration (cells, BMS, enclosure), the documents that exist for that model, and which entity produces it |
| Trial order | Can the supplier repeat the sample, and will your customers buy it? | Test several units from the batch, not one; compare with the sample you kept; sell to a few real customers | The same written specification as the sample; what happens if units differ from it; who handles a failed unit and the return freight |
| Repeat order | Is quality steady and is your cost model right? | Track failures, delivery time and customer feedback; re-run your cost worksheet | Reorders quoted against the original written specification; component changes raised with you before they reach an order |
Protecting the first payment
- Pay only to a company account that matches the legal entity named on the quotation, and compare the bank details with the quotation before you transfer.
- Decide in advance which milestone releases the balance, for example your own sample sign-off or an inspection report, and write it into the order.
- For a larger first order, consider a third-party pre-shipment inspection and weigh its cost against the value of the order.
- Keep photos, test records and messages; any claim needs them.
