Closed-Loop Inverter Communication for 51.2V (48V-Class) LiFePO4 Batteries: What to Confirm Before You Order

For installers, distributors and system integrators, the most common reason a 51.2V (48V class) LiFePO4 order goes wrong is not the cell or the capacity. It is the link between the battery BMS and the inverter. This guide explains what “closed-loop” communication means, what to confirm for each inverter, and how to test a sample before a volume order.

LJY Energy is a China-based LiFePO4 battery supplier and OEM/ODM solutions provider offering customization, project-confirmed specifications and export supply coordination. Communication protocol, port, cable and parallel set-up are configured per project; this page does not publish a fixed list of compatible inverters.

Closed-loop and open-loop: the practical difference

Mode Item What it means Status
Closed-loop (BMS to inverter) Mode The BMS sends live data over CAN or RS485 and the inverter follows it. Data commonly carried: charge voltage limit, charge current limit, discharge current limit, state of charge, alarm and protection flags. [Industry reference]
Closed-loop (BMS to inverter) Why buyers ask for it The inverter charges and discharges inside limits set by the battery, shows battery SOC, and can reduce current before the BMS has to disconnect. [Industry reference]
Open-loop (voltage set manually) Mode The inverter is set to a user-defined lithium profile (charge voltage, cut-off voltage, current) and receives no data from the BMS. The BMS still protects the battery by disconnecting, which can trip the inverter with a fault. [Industry reference]
Open-loop (voltage set manually) When it is used Simple systems, small installs, or when no matching protocol exists. Settings must be copied from the battery datasheet. [Industry reference]

Inverter protocol settings by brand: the matrix

The table below collects the protocol selection points on the inverter side for the brands buyers ask about most, so you can check each one against your own inverter manual. Evidence is graded in three tiers: Documented (the setting is published in the manufacturer’s own documentation), Protocol-compatible (the BMS supports the protocol, but no bench test on that exact inverter model is claimed) and Voltage-only (no matching protocol; run open-loop on a user-defined profile copied from the battery datasheet).

No row is a compatibility promise, and LJY Energy does not appear on any inverter manufacturer’s approved battery list. Confirm the final pairing by testing a sample on your exact inverter model and firmware before a volume order, as described in the sample test section below; the inverter battery compatibility calculator gives a first-pass check of voltage class and protocol family.

Brand / series Interface Setting on the inverter Battery side Evidence tier
Deye / Sunsynk hybrid (SUN-…K-SG series) CAN Battery mode = Lithium; CAN protocol 00 (Pylontech CAN) BMS CAN profile = Pylontech Documented
Growatt SPF (off-grid) RS485 or CAN Program 05 = LI; Program 36 = L04 (Pylontech, RS485) or L52 (Pylontech, CAN); battery DIP switch 1000 BMS profile = Pylontech (match the interface chosen) Documented
Growatt SPH / MOD hybrid CAN or RS485 by model Select the Pylontech protocol per the model manual Per model manual Protocol-compatible
Solis S6-EH1P-L-PLUS (low-voltage L series only) CAN Battery Model = PYLON_LV BMS CAN profile = Pylontech LV Documented
Victron (MultiPlus / Quattro + GX) CAN (BMS-Can port on the GX device) No protocol number; CAN-BMS with DVCC on. Note: the GX may override the battery’s requested charge voltage — Victron documents capping Pylontech 15S packs at 52.4V even when the BMS requests 53.2V; confirm how your pack’s charge voltage limit (CVL) is handled before ordering BMS CAN profile = Pylontech-compatible frames Documented
MUST PV1800 / PV18 series RS485 / CAN by model A lithium / BMS protocol menu is present; PV18 PRO II documentation lists PYLON BMS via CAN (protocol set 8). The exact menu position varies by model and firmware — confirm against the manual for the exact model Per model manual Protocol-compatible
SRNE HF / HFP / HYP all-in-one RS485 Parameter [32] = BMS; Parameter [33] = PYL (PYLONTECH) BMS RS485 profile = Pylontech Documented
Any inverter without a matching protocol — User-defined lithium profile: copy the charge and cut-off values from the battery datasheet Open-loop; the BMS protects by disconnecting Voltage-only

Pin-outs and cable wiring: RJ45 pin assignments differ between brands and models — the positions of CAN H/L and RS485 A/B are not uniform — so the communication cable is made for the confirmed model and supplied with the order. A wrong wire order is the most common cause of “protocol is right but nothing connects”.

Voltage arithmetic for a 16S 51.2V pack

A 51.2V (48V class) LiFePO4 battery is normally 16 cells in series: 16 × 3.2V = 51.2V nominal. Even at the 3.65V per-cell absolute upper limit the pack voltage is 16 × 3.65V = 58.4V. Real charge set-points are chosen lower than this limit and are part of the BMS and inverter profile, so they are confirmed per project. A mismatch between the inverter profile and the battery limits is the typical cause of early cut-offs, unbalanced packs and nuisance alarms.

What to confirm for every inverter model

Group Parameter Value Status
Inverter Brand, model and firmware version Protocols change between firmware versions. Quote the firmware, not only the model. [Confirmed per project]
Inverter Battery protocol or profile selected on the inverter Many hybrid inverters offer selectable lithium battery profiles, often named by brand. The BMS must be set to the matching profile. [Optional configuration] · [Confirmed per project]
Port Inverter communication port type (RJ45 or terminal block; CAN or RS485) CAN and RS485 are different buses. Port type and pin assignment decide the cable. [Confirmed per project]
Cable Cable pinout and length Supplied per project. The pinout is confirmed against the inverter manual, not assumed from the brand. [Optional configuration] · [Confirmed per project]
Battery BMS communication protocol and baud rate Configured to the customer requirement (OEM/ODM). Several protocol profiles can be offered on one platform. [Optional configuration]
Parallel Number of batteries in parallel and addressing method Master/slave addressing, DIP-switch or auto addressing differ by design. No fixed maximum is published; the limit depends on the BMS and the inverter. [Optional configuration] · [Confirmed per project]
System Dry contact, remote on/off, temperature input Needed on some inverters for shutdown or generator start. [Optional configuration]
System Monitoring Bluetooth, Wi-Fi gateway or display link, if the project needs it. [Optional configuration]
Evidence Test record for your inverter model and firmware Provided only where a test on that exact combination exists. No compatibility is claimed on this page. [Confirmed per project]

How to test a sample before a volume order

  • Wire the sample to the actual inverter model and firmware you will ship, with the project cable; do not test on a different model.
  • Check that the inverter detects the battery and shows voltage and SOC that move together.
  • Check that charge and discharge current limits follow the BMS values rather than a fixed inverter setting.
  • Check how the system behaves at the high and low SOC ends, using normal operation only. Do not run short-circuit or other destructive tests.
  • Record the inverter firmware, battery BMS version, the protocol setting and a photo or screenshot. Repeat the check after any inverter firmware update.
  • If you use several batteries, test the parallel set-up you will install, not a single unit.

How to judge a supplier’s “compatible with” claim

A list of brand names is a marketing statement, not evidence. Ask for: the protocol or profile name, the cable pinout, the inverter firmware used, a dated test record or screenshot, and who is responsible if a firmware update breaks the link. LJY Energy confirms these items per project and states what has actually been tested for your combination in the quotation.

Commissioning checks that decide whether the link works

Installer forums and inverter makers’ own compatibility pages keep pointing to the same few items when a battery and an inverter will not talk. Victron’s cable manual, for example, lists different cable types and pin-outs by battery brand and warns that self-made cables are a frequent cause of hard-to-diagnose faults. Ask the supplier for each item below in writing before the volume order.

Group Parameter What to ask Status
System Device that terminates the battery link Some inverter families do not accept a battery CAN link directly. Victron’s compatibility pages, for instance, require a GX device between the battery and the inverter-charger. Ask which device ends the battery link in your system. [Confirmed per project]
Cable Pin-out of the battery port A cable that is right for one battery family can be wrong for another, and a standard straight-through network cable is not always correct. Ask for the pin-out drawing of the battery port and compare it with the inverter manual. [Confirmed per project]
Bus Termination and speed A CAN bus needs a terminator at each physical end, and the inverter side may need a fixed speed (Victron’s BMS-Can port works at 500 kbit/s). Ask where termination is set on the battery and which speed and protocol name the BMS uses. [Confirmed per project]
Parallel Address or ID rule With several batteries on one bus, the ID scheme decides which pack carries the inverter link. Installer reports describe intermittent communication faults, or a pack missing from the monitor, after a wrong ID. Ask for the ID table and the master/slave wiring diagram. [Confirmed per project]
Data Values the BMS sends Inverter-side monitors need at least state of charge, charge and discharge limits and temperature; installer reports note that runtime estimates can be missing when capacity is not reported. Ask which values the BMS sends over the link. [Confirmed per project]

Keep the answers with the quotation and repeat the check after any inverter firmware update. Source for the Victron examples: Victron Energy, VE.Can to CAN-bus BMS cables manual.

Frequently asked questions

Do you publish a list of compatible inverters?

Not a promise list. The matrix above publishes the protocol settings and the evidence tier for each brand instead, because inverter firmware changes the protocol behaviour and a static compatibility list would age quickly. Compatibility is still confirmed per project, and a sample is tested on your exact inverter model and firmware before a volume order.

Can I run the battery without communication?

Often yes, in open-loop mode with a user-defined lithium profile copied from the datasheet. The BMS still protects the battery, but the inverter will not know the battery state. Closed-loop is preferred when the inverter supports it.

Can several batteries share one inverter?

Yes in many systems. The maximum number is not fixed here; it depends on the BMS design, the addressing method and the inverter, and is confirmed per project.

Can the protocol be changed for my brand?

BMS communication is an OEM/ODM option. Tell us the inverter model and firmware and the protocol or profile you will select on it.

Which documents are available?

Document scope, test reports and certificate ownership are confirmed per model, order and target market. None are claimed on this page.

What inverter details should I send to confirm closed-loop communication?

Send the inverter brand and exact model, the firmware version (a screenshot of the about or version screen is enough), the communication port you plan to use (CAN, RS485 or other), and the battery profile or protocol name you will select in the inverter menu. Add the battery model, the number of batteries per system and your target market. Closed-loop behaviour can change between firmware versions of the same inverter model, so we confirm the BMS protocol per project against those exact details rather than a brand-name list. Before a volume order, the pairing should be checked on a sample with your inverter.

Have the model, firmware and protocol fields ready? Send them with your RFQ and we will confirm the BMS protocol for your project in writing.
