Sri Lanka is a small market in our records by count — 24 Sri Lankan buyers on file, 17 of them stating a product need and 16 graded A or B — and we say so plainly rather than inflating it. The signature is solar-plus-storage: solar dealers and installers, two A-grade telecom buyers, RV/marine and golf OEMs, and one A-grade ESS integrator whose first move was to request the full datasheet documentation for a 1MWh storage system before any price discussion. This page covers the market background, the products Sri Lankan buyers actually ask us about, and the checks that matter before a shipment leaves China. India is a separate market with its own India supplier page; this page is about Sri Lanka only. Research date: November 2026.
Why Sri Lanka Buys Batteries: Rooftop Solar, the Net Plus Shift and the Evening Peak
Three structural facts explain the inquiry mix — treat this section as market background, separate from the documented buyer signals in the next section. First, rooftop solar is already large: the Energy Ministry puts installed rooftop capacity at roughly 2,500 MW, and daytime solar output has at times exceeded 2,000 MW against a daytime peak of about 2,500–2,600 MW. That success created the second fact: the compensation schemes changed. Sri Lanka’s grid-connected rooftop schemes — Net Metering (export credited against your own consumption), Net Accounting (surplus paid at a set rate) and Net Plus (all generation exported at a feed-in tariff, consumption billed separately) — were restructured by an Energy Ministry directive in September: new rooftop connections are now approved under Net Plus only, while existing Net Metering and Net Accounting customers continue under their current agreements. Under Net Plus a battery no longer earns its keep by netting against a bill; its value moves to self-consumption through zero-export configurations — which sit outside the new connection limits — to backup duty, and, for producers above 250 kW, to the Public Utilities Commission’s published night-time battery tariff for storage paired with generation. The National System Operator is planning roughly 1,240 MW / 4,660 MWh of battery storage for 2027–2029 for the same reason: the grid’s problem is now the evening peak, not daytime energy. Third, import treatment is size-dependent and in transition: duty concessions currently favour large storage systems (above 1 MW in the government’s own description, with extension to smaller bands under discussion), smaller systems remain taxed, and the Energy Minister has stated publicly that national quality standards for battery systems are not yet established. For a dealer, that combination makes written per-model documentation and a written duty position — before ordering — worth more in Sri Lanka than in most markets.
What Sri Lankan Buyers Actually Order
The table below is drawn from our CRM records of inquiries received from Sri Lankan buyers. The base is small — 24 companies — so treat each line as a documented demand pattern, one inquiry equals one signal, not a market statistic. Specifications, pricing and lead time are always confirmed per order.
| Segment | Documented requests from Sri Lankan buyers | Who asks |
|---|---|---|
| ESS projects | An A-grade ESS integrator requested the complete datasheet documentation for a 1MWh energy storage system as the first step — documentation before price; several further records tagged ESS combined with home/commercial storage and solar | ESS integrators, project developers |
| Solar dealers & installers | Solar is the largest application tag across the records; 12V is the largest voltage cluster, including 12V packs for solar systems and an A-grade wholesale distributor with a 12V solar requirement | Solar distributors, installers, wholesalers |
| Telecom 48V | Two A-grade telecom buyers, both combining 48V LiFePO4 with storage duty (home/commercial storage and telecom/UPS applications) | Telecom contractors, tower power suppliers |
| Light EV & three-wheelers | A 12V 50Ah LiFePO4 inquiry for an electric bike, and a quotation exchange for an electric three-wheeler fitted with a solar panel | E-mobility importers, assemblers |
| RV, marine & golf | Two A-grade RV/marine OEM records (storage plus 12V) and an A-grade golf equipment OEM asking for 12V golf and solar batteries | OEMs, equipment distributors |
The matching standard series: 12V 100Ah deep-cycle for solar and backup work, 48V telecom batteries and the telecom backup power range for base-station duty, 51.2V rack-mount ESS for home and commercial storage, and containerized ESS for project-scale storage. For a project request, the fields that matter are the ones in the BESS RFQ checklist — capacity, duty profile, inverter pairing and documentation requirements stated up front.
Sri Lanka-Specific Checks: Scheme, Evening Load, Heat and Monsoon
The same battery does a different job depending on which CEB or LECO scheme the end customer sits on. Before you order, confirm these points in writing for the exact model:
- Scheme first — a customer on a legacy Net Metering or Net Accounting agreement, a new Net Plus connection, and a zero-export self-consumption system need three different configurations. Confirm which scheme applies and whether the hybrid inverter’s export-limit behaviour matches it; grid approval of the inverter sits with your local installer and utility, the battery side must confirm communication pairing per model.
- Size to the evening load — under Net Plus, daytime export is already paid by tariff; the battery earns its keep after sunset. Size capacity and discharge power to the measured evening and night load profile, not to the size of the panel array.
- Project documentation pack — for storage above 250 kW chasing the night-time battery tariff, and for MWh-class ESS, buyers and utilities ask for datasheets and test documentation before commercial discussion (our A-grade signal above is exactly this pattern). Assemble the document pack for the exact model before quotation, not after.
- Heat, humidity and salt air — coastal installations around Colombo, Galle and Jaffna add salt-air corrosion to tropical heat and monsoon rain. Confirm the operating temperature range, enclosure protection and connector specification per model, and site fixed banks above local flood level.
- Cycle basis at real depth of discharge — a backup or zero-export bank may cycle daily. Ask for the cycle rating at the depth of discharge you will actually run (for example 80% DoD), not the most flattering figure on the datasheet.
Certification and Import: Confirm Per Model, Before Shipment
Approval attaches to a specific model, not to a chemistry or a brand. Our standing rule: the certification and test-document status of the exact model you are ordering is confirmed in writing before shipment, and no blanket “certified” claim is made for a range. For Sri Lanka specifically, two points deserve care. First, the duty and tax treatment of battery imports is size-dependent and changing: concessions currently favour large systems, relief for smaller systems is under government discussion, and the applicable treatment for your exact system size and HS line must be confirmed with your clearing agent in writing before you commit to a landed price. Second, because national battery quality standards are still being established, the practical protection is documentation: the document pack — commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, the UN38.3 test summary and the model’s datasheet/MSDS — confirmed against the model before production. Where a document does not exist for a model, we say so before you commit rather than after the goods land in Colombo.
How to Compare Quotes in LKR and USD
Quotes from China are normally issued in USD, while your selling price sits in rupees — so two quotes are only comparable after the same conversion work. A five-point method:
- Same usable capacity — compare cost per usable kWh at the stated depth of discharge, not per nameplate Ah; against a lead-acid bank, remember its usable capacity is roughly half its label.
- Cycle basis stated — a cheaper pack rated for fewer cycles at your real DoD can cost more per year of service in daily-cycling solar or backup duty. Divide price by expected service years, not just by kWh.
- Same delivery basis — an EXW price and a price landed in Colombo differ by ocean freight, duty, taxes and clearing charges; because Sri Lanka’s battery duty treatment differs by system size and is in transition, normalise both quotes using your agent’s current written duty position for that size band.
- Configuration included? — for zero-export and hybrid systems, whether inverter pairing confirmation and export-limit configuration support are inside the quote changes the real installed cost.
- Documents and warranty in writing — the document list confirmed before production, and warranty years, capacity-retention threshold and claim handling stated on the quotation.
How Sourcing with LJY Energy Works
LJY Energy is a China-based LiFePO4 battery supplier and sourcing partner working with qualified manufacturing partners — we coordinate specification, production and export; we do not ask you to take factory claims on faith. The workflow for Sri Lankan buyers: send your requirement (application, scheme or duty type, voltage platform, capacity, quantity, destination port) via the contact form; we confirm the written specification — including cycle basis, inverter pairing and the document status of the exact model — before quotation; production runs through our manufacturing partners with checkpoints agreed per order; the export document pack is prepared against your import terms. Distributors or assemblers with a non-standard format can start from custom battery solutions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a battery still make sense under the Net Plus scheme?
Yes, but its job changes. Under Net Plus your generation is exported and paid by tariff, so a battery does not raise that payment for a small system. What it does instead: shift solar energy into your own evening consumption in a zero-export configuration, carry critical loads through outages, and — for producers above 250 kW paired with generation — access the published night-time battery tariff. Size the battery to the evening load profile and confirm the scheme and configuration in writing before ordering.
What documents can you provide for an ESS project or tender?
For the exact model in the project, we confirm in writing which documents exist — datasheet, UN38.3 test summary, MSDS and any model-specific test reports — before your submission deadline, and we state plainly where a requested document does not exist for that model. Our Sri Lankan records show this is how project buyers actually start: the first A-grade ESS inquiry we received from Sri Lanka asked for a 1MWh system’s full datasheet documentation before any price discussion.
Can you supply batteries for electric three-wheelers and e-bikes?
Yes, on a specification-first basis: voltage platform, controller peak current against the BMS rating, daily range target and charging pattern are confirmed in writing before a quote is built. Documented Sri Lankan inquiries in this segment include a 12V 50Ah pack for an electric bike and a solar-panel three-wheeler quotation — small today, and quoted the same careful way.
What quantities can Sri Lankan dealers start with?
It depends on the series: sample and small trial orders are the normal starting pattern for 12V and telecom lines, while ESS projects are quoted per project specification. State your target quantity and the scheme or duty the battery will work under in the inquiry, and the quotation will be built on them — no catalogue MOQ is invented here.
